- The Asia-Pacific region, comprising some of the most dynamic
economies in the world, has experienced unprecedented growth
in the last two decades. Economic relations among businesses
of the region and United States also have increased
dramatically, fueled by growing trade and financial flows.
- In
1996
, U.S. trade with this region
totaled $920.8 billion, roughly
65%
of U.S. trade with the world.
U.S. exports to the region have increased
70%
since
1990
. U.S. imports from the region
have increased 69%
since
1990
. Among the counties inside the
region, China is a major contributor to the economies. Leading
U.S. exports include aircraft and parts, data processing
equipment, electronic components, parts for office machinery,
and telecommunications equipment. American companies located in
China increasingly manufacture higher-technology products,
particularly electronics, for re-export to the U.S. and to
third-country markets.
