Tiananmen ( )


Tiananmen, also known as Gate of Heavenly Peace, is located in the heart of Beijing. It is the main gate to the Imperial City of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The gate was first erected in 1417 and known as Chengtianmen. In 1651 it was rebuilt and given its present name.

Tiananmen

 

The gate itself consists of a red platform with five vaulted gateways, surmounted by a wooden gate-tower. The magnificent gate-tower has a double roof of yellow glazed tiles and vermilion columns. Before and behind the gateways are two pairs of white marble columns.

Tiananmen Square

 

In front of the gate is Tiananmen Square. The square covers an area of 40 hectares, the largest in the world.

The Monument to the Peoples' Heroes is in the center of Tiananmen Square.

Located at the other side of Tiananmen Square. Facing directly with Tiananmen.
