How to View/Print Postscript and PDF Files

PDF Files.
Postscript Files
You can view and/or print postscript files (i.e., files with
"ps" extension) from Project Vincent’s UNIX workstation
or from a personal computer (PC) with postscript viewer installed.
- Project Vincent
. Log in to Project Vincent, then use
"dxpsview" to view postscript files. Use
"lpr" to print files. Refer to Project Vincent
document for technical details on printing.
- Personal Computer
. To view and/or print postscript
files from a PC, you need to have a special viewer such as
"GSview" installed in your machine. GSview
is a free ware and can be downloaded from:
"http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/get510.html" or
from my course FTP server at "global.bus.iastate.edu"
You need to have an ID and Password to download files from
this server. After login, move to "m528/systems/gs"
The following steps are procedure to install GSview on a PC:
- Create a temporary subdirectory (e.g., gs) for downloading files.
- Download the following compressed files - gsview24w32.zip,
gs510w32.zip, gs510ini.zip, and gs510fn1.zip from a FTP server.
Store all files in the same subdirectory (i.e., gs).
- Extract "gsview24w32.zip" using WinZip utility.
(Please do not extract other three files). WinZip is
available for use at the College of Business’s computer lab. An
evaluation version can also be downloaded from:
"http://www.winzip.com/"
- Run "setup.exe" from Windows 95. Following instructions
to complete the setup. Please use the suggested default directory
"c:\gstools" (if possible) but you may change a different
location where your hard drive was installed (e.g., d:\gstools,
or others). If succeed, the computer will install the necessary
files and generate a windows called GS Tools with four icons -
ghostscript, ghostscript README, GSview, and GSview README in it.
- Configure GSview. Run GSview, select options, configure ghostscript,
and click "OK" to complete the configuration.
From now on, you can use GSview as any other installed programs.
You can click on the file name directly from Windows Explorer to
view its contents or run GSview first, click on "File"
and "open" from the menu bar to select the file.
To print a file, load the file, then select "File"
and "Print" from the menu bar, specify the page
numbers to be printed, click "OK" to print You can print
postscript files from most printers even it don’t have postscript
support.

PDF Files
PDF, stands for Portable Document
File, is another popular file format that can be
accessed across platforms. The files with PDF format can be
viewed and/or printed using Adobe’s Acrobat Reader or GSview:
- Acrobat Reader
is available for use at the College
of Business’s computer lab. It can also be downloaded from
Adobe’s web site located at:
"http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html"
- GSview
. If you specify to access PDF file during its
installation, you should be able to view and/or print both
"PS" and "PDF" files from GSview.
